Current Situation -Mangroves in Puerto Rico

Published on January 1, 2023 by Coastal Conservation

After hurricanes Irma and Maria hit the island of Puerto Rico in 2017 more than 50% of mangrove patches around the archipelago were severely damaged, with some begin almost completely lost. More than five years after, mangroves have not yet recuperated. Mangroves, being excellent carbon sinks, helping to mitigate climate change, protecting coastal communities from floods due to storm surges, are critical to the stability and livelihood of the islands residents. We are collaborating with the most educated and prepared organizations for their ecological restoration.

We created 2 mangrove nurseries in community schools in Santa Isabel and Culebra, and we are going to create one in Isabela. Our goal for 2023 is to plant a minimum of 6,000 mangroves before the years end. Help us reach our goal with your support.
