About
FPLA dedicates exclusively to help spay and neuter dogs and cats by providing low-to-zero cost services for pets from lower income families and for caregivers conducting TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccine-Return) of cat colonies.
By focusing our efforts solely on spay/neuter, not only does this require little overhead but we expand our impact via local partnerships with welfare groups so they can focus on their mission, whether adoption or colony caretaking.
Why our efforts are so important? One essential reason is because there are over 500,000 dogs and 1,000,000 cats estimated to be living miserable on the streets, which not only is extremely terrible for the animals but also may affect communities' public health, among other situations. In addition, most of companion stray animals are a result of unwanted offspring of pets from poor families, which is 43.5% of Puerto Rico’s population, who cannot afford veterinary services to spay/neuter.
FPLA is working animal homelessness at its roots through sterilization, which studies have demonstrated is the only humane, efficient and proven solution to decrease and control cat and dog populations. Last year we performed 2,218 spay/neuter which prevented homelessness of at least 13,000 offspring within that one year alone.
