About
We need your help. The horses need your help.
Each year, hundreds of Thoroughbreds are shipped to Puerto Rico and surrounding islands for racing, through no fault of their own.
After their racing careers have ended, horses here on the islands have very limited options. Puerto Rico is an already economically challenged island, still trying to bounce back after the devastating cat 4 hurricane Maria in 2017. In addition to the economic challenges, the islands struggle with the animal overpopulation of dogs and cats already.
Thoroughbreds come with a unique set of needs; they eat significantly more than other breeds, are larger and need more space, skilled handlers, and often have special dietary, shoeing, and medical needs. These, and other factors, result in us being able to re-home about 12 horses per year in Puerto Rico.
With hundreds of horses retiring each year, we often find ourselves in the heartbreaking position of having to turn away candidates for retirement. Many of those horses will end up in unqualified homes, dumped, or euthanized.
We have partnered with several TAA-approved after cares in the US who will take horses from CTA if we can cover the transportation costs. That is where you can help! If we can raise more funds, we can send more horses on to good homes, and well-earned retirements, and save more horses!
$3,800 will cover the cost of quarantine, required vaccines, and flight from Puerto Rico to Miami, FL.
